Spectrum Journey

John August: A journey through autism

When to throw in the towel!

John has the sniffles and isn’t sleeping that well. He was up at 4am again today. Any day that he’s up that early, I am worried about what kind of day he’s going to have at school. He was in a good mood this morning so I was hopeful after morning therapy ended. He didn’t have any accidents at school and enjoyed the book The Tiny Seed. For afternoon therapy, his therapist took him to the library and got a cheeseburger. John was cooperative for most of the time, but as the evening went on, he started to get grumpy. Eventually, all John was doing was screaming and pounding the ground. We ended therapy a little early because there was no longer any benefit for him going through any more therapy.

We walk a fine line between when to push John and have him work hard at therapy, and when to stop for the day because it is only causing more stress. Most days we have him power through his work, but with his stuffy nose and lack of sleep last night we gave John a break so he can relax and wind down. Hopefully, he gets a good night of restful sleep!
